Import a supported ePassport with NFC

Scan the machine-readable zone, read the chip, and confirm the result.

Passport NFC is an optional data-entry shortcut on a compatible iPhone with a supported ePassport. It does not verify a passport's authenticity or determine travel eligibility.

  1. In Documents, tap plus and choose Passport NFC.
  2. Scan the two machine-readable lines on the passport photo page.
  3. Follow the prompt to hold the top edge of iPhone against the passport while the chip is read.
  4. Review every suggested field and correct it before saving the reminder record.

The chip cannot be read

Check that the MRZ was read correctly and that the passport has a supported contactless chip. Hold the phone steady in the prompted position. Compatibility varies with the passport and chip access method.

If NFC remains unavailable, use Camera, Photos, or Manual instead. NFC is not required to create a passport reminder. The current import reads supported DG1 identity fields; it does not read the passport portrait or certify the document.
